During this 6 day practical project, you will learn the basic skills involved in properly operating a digital SLR camera and taking effective digital photos. Skills development and learning will come from a combination of introductory theory lessons, demonstrations, reference manuals and hands-on training.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Working in pairs, you will learn how to operate one of our class digital SLR cameras (Nikon D40, D60, D70, D90 or D3000). While features on each camera may vary slightly, the basic operations are quite similar. See below for links to online manuals for each camera to help you with your skills development during this unit.
- Each partner is required to take a series of photographs that clearly demonstrate a strong understanding of the basic functions of a digital SLR camera. You may work together to learn how to operate the camera, but make sure each person develops a personal collection for submission later in the Flash Photo Gallery unit.
- During this unit, you will develop an understanding of the following photography/camera handling principles and skills:
- Safe handing of camera and lighting equipment
- Camera settings and adjustments
- Working with Light
- Shutter Speed
- White Balance
- Depth of Field
- Aperture Settings
- ISO ("Film" speed)
- 3-Point Portrait Lighting
- Product Photography
- Image Composition/Rule of Thirds

- During this unit, you will keep track of each picture taken using a LOG SHEET. Click here to view. You will record time, date, subject of the photo, aperture, shutter speed, film/ISO speed, lens type and camera model for each picture.
- 2 Shutter Speed Photos (slow vs. fast shutter speed of same moving subject)
- 2 White Balance Photos (correct vs. incorrect white balance of same subject)
- 3 Exposure Photos (1 under-exposed, 1 over-exposed, 1 correct exposure - same subject/lighting)
- 2 Depth of Field Photos (shallow vs. deep depth of field photos of same subject) - MUST USE MANUAL FOCUS!
- 2 Rule of Thirds Photos
- 2 Unique Angle/Composed Photos
- 2 Shots Working With Natural Light/Shadow/Backlight
- 4 Product Photos: 2 reflective objects, 2 non-reflective (use of lighting kit and no lighting kit)
- 3 Portrait Photos (1 point, 2 point and 3 point lighting schemes of same person/subject)
- You must keep a record of photo settings for each image you take (or refer to picture Metadata on computer/camera)
- Plan on taking pictures of you and your partner at work during the activity (images could be used on your portfolio website).

WHAT YOU'LL HAND IN:
- Each group member will ensure his/her images are well-organized in your hand-in folder for future use (see assignment outline for details).
- You will hand in your detailed log sheet after completing your web photo gallery/portfolio later in the course.
